Back in college when I asked a friend of mine with gorgeous skin how she maintained her beautiful skin, her answer surprised me.
I just follow a procedure of double facial cleansing and don’t need to spend money on expensive skin care products.
Wow. Up until this time, I had spent money after money seeking the best products but never thought about following a cleansing procedure or schedule. Sure you need discipline but the results speak for themselves.
It’s not easy maintaining transparent and soft skin from all the makeup waste, sebum, dirt and other pollutant on our face. These substances not only slow down skin metabolism but the oily ingredients and sebum contained in cosmetic products form oxidation and lipid peroxide which accelerates the effect of aging skin.
So we now get an idea of why performing double facial cleansing each night can dramatically improve our skin. What is double facial cleaning? We’ll get to that later on.
Facial Cleansing Twice a Day: Morning & Night
Even if you don’t put on makeup, our skin is still contaminated by the dirt in the air and becomes dehydrated in the afternoon.
For our skin to efficiently absorb water during facial cleansing, it is important to clean your face with warm water and cleanser. Facial skin is sensitive, so don’t rub or press too hard but rather gently touch or slide your fingers. After rinsing with warm water, turn off the hot faucet and turn on the cold water to splash cold water onto your face to provide moisture.
When you first wash your face with warm water and a cleanser, the warm temperature of the water opens up the pores on your face and removes the waste we discussed above. The reason for the cold water at the end is to close (or minimize) the pore openings and provide moisture.
One other point that I follow is I never wipe or dry my face with a towel but simply air dry. I’ve found this to moisturize my skin much better. It also prevents my face from forming unnecessary wrinkles if I were to wipe and rub my face with a towel.
Some people believe the myth that they can improve their skin quality and condition by cleansing frequently. A couple of people I know cleanse more than 5 times a day! And then they wonder why their skin is no different. Overdoing something is never the answer.
Proper Method of Facial Cleansing
[In the Morning]
- Splash 100 degree F (40 degree C) water on your face and get your skin warm.
- Get a foam cleanser, create enough foam on your palm, loosen your finger and apply the foam cleanser onto your face. Gently apply as your fingers draw a big circle from inside to outside of your face. Use your thumb to cleanse the back of your ears.
- Soak a piece of gauze in warm water and gently wipe off the cleanser on your face. Wash the gauze and squeeze out the excess water. Repeat this process 5 times.
- Splash cold water on your face. Repeat at least 5 times as you remove possible remainders of waste or oily ingredients completely. Provide enough moisture to your skin. This helps minimize pores of your facial skin.
- [My tip] Let your face air dry and while your skin is slightly damp, promptly apply skin toner and moisturizing cream followed by other makeup products.
[In the Evening]
Prior to step #1, completely remove makeup using makeup remover products (oils, lotion, or tissues). Then follow all of the steps above. Double facial cleansing is very important if you put make up on.
