I have to admit that I’m lazy and I’m not a big fan of makeup.
But as you know, cleansing your face is the first step for skin care. Since removing makeup is more important than applying it, we should have a process of devoting some time to skin care every night.
We’ve gone over methods of proper facial cleansing but what about the opposite. Do you know what you shouldn’t do
5 Wrong Facial Cleansing Methods
1. Cleansing Too Hard and Aggressively
When we clean, we usually scrub hard. Think of the bath tub or the window anything else you normally clean.
Ironically, cleansing does not fall into this category. Scrubbing or washing your face too hard or aggressively isn’t the way to go about cleansing and skin care.
Hard rubbing irritates, dehydrates skin, lowers skin elasticity and accelerates the aging of the skin. If you’d like to do deep cleansing, try covering your face with a warm steamed towel in order to open your pores and then cleanse.
So get your face cleanser or any other facial cleansing product that you like and lather up plenty of foam in your hands. Foam can act like a cushion between your hands and face making it easier on your skin.
Don’t be like me and try to be stingy with the cleanser only to realize my face is getting dry and irritated while cleansing and then having to do it again properly.
2. Cleansing and Washing Too Long
Some cleansing products contains oils which may indicate that a 2 to 3 minute massage is required. But this is rather misleading
Rubbing on your face for 3 minutes won’t get your skin any cleaner than when you’ve done it properly for 1 minute or even 2.
However, too much rubbing can lead to skin irritation and overly dry out your skin. Your body as well as your skin works to maintain and healthy balance, so when you rub and rub and rub, your skin will have to work just as hard to bring balance back.
If you have severe keratin problems, you may also use exfoliators. (Warning: Avoid the areas of eyes and mouth where skin’s stratum corneum is thinner and metabolism rate is lower than other areas of your face).
3. Not Understanding the Purpose of Face Cleansing
There are some face cleansing methods that consists of 5-6 steps. Cleansing should be a process of eliminating waste on your skin, not to completely remove every bit of moisture, oil and nutrient your skin requires.
As I mentioned above, excessive cleansing leads to drier skin which will leave your face feeling very tight and uncomfortable.
4. Cleansing with Cold Water Only
I’ve mentioned in my other articles that splashing your face with cold water will tighten your pores. Now there are some people who are of enlarging their pores that they wash only with cold water.
Unfortunately, cleansing with cold water doesn’t do a good job of removing impurities from beneath the surface of your skin.
Remember warm water to open pores, then cold water to close them.
5. Having Makeup on for Too Long
The first thing we should do when we get home after a day or night out is to remove makeup. After all your skin needs to breathe as well and if you tend to heavily apply makeup, it is suffocating to your skin.
This is one of the reasons why so many celebrities have terrible skin. They have such thick makeup on that their skin can’t cope which is also why I prefer to apply makeup lightly.
However, one of the common excuses for not removing makeup immediately is “I’m too tired. I’ll do it after I rest a little.” If you’re like me, you know where this excuse takes you.
